Takeshi Hongo is the main protagonist of Kamen Rider. He is a young student who was kidnapped by Shocker and turned into a Cyborg, later escaping and deciding to use his powers for good as the Kamen Rider. Though he temporarily left Japan in the hands of his successor Hayato Ichimonji, he returned and retroactively bore the name Kamen Rider 1.

Born on August 15, 1948, Takeshi Hongo is a student at Johnan University, majoring in biochemistry. In his free time, Hongo trained to become a professional motorcycle racer, coached by bike-trainer Tobee Tachibana.

During practice with Tachibana, he is attacked and captured by Shocker, who were attracted to Hongo's high IQ and amazing physical prowess. Within a week, Shocker converted him into a cybernetically enhanced soldier, done while Hongo was unconscious.

Just before Hongo was brainwashed into serving Shocker, his associate Dr. Hiroshi Midorikawa intervened, the two narrowly escaping. As a result, Shocker sends the Man Spider monster after them.

While hiding, Doctor Midorikawa explains the situation to Hongo, much to his shock.
