The VF-19 was given to Nekki Basara by Ray Lovelock, who was selected as a selection officer for the New United Nations Army's Project M (Minmay).

This machine was developed before the VF-19 was fully deployed, and unlike later mass-produced 19-series machines, its basic performance is similar to the prototype YF-19 and the early A-type, with peaky specifications. However, its design differs in several ways from the YF-19 and VF-19 types for which internal concept drawings exist, leading some to speculate that it may be based on one of the undefined B-type or D-types. It was not procured specifically for Basara, but rather served as a test aircraft for the official adoption of the VF-19 in the Macross 7 fleet, as well as an experimental aircraft to demonstrate the effectiveness of song. For this reason, it undergoes regular unofficial maintenance and data collection with military backing.

It has been tuned specifically for Basara, with a red and black base color. Its head is human-shaped, and its mouth opens and closes like a human's. Its control system incorporates a sound stick system. This is a system in which the control stick is shaped like a guitar, and by moving the slots, Basara can control the Valkyrie while making sounds, which he can control freely. Basara himself can play the guitar and control the Valkyrie without using this system, but introducing this system reduces the burden on Basara.

When attacking the Barotas' army, Basara sorties alone, singing during the battle. Midway through the story, it is upgraded to the VF-19 Modified Fire Valkyrie SB (Sound Booster), equipped with a sound booster that emits sound beams (songs converted into energy by the Sound Energy System). In the final episode, it is destroyed by Gepelnich.

The name given to the vehicle, based on its appearance and Basara, is both "Excalibur" and "Valkyrie". However, the official website uses the latter name.
