Mazinger Z was built following the discovery of Japanium, a rare ore found beneath Mt. Fuji, from which the incredibly strong Super Alloy Z was derived. Dr. Juzo Kabuto designed the titanic robot to combat Dr. Hell, a sinister figure bent on using Mechanical Beasts to dominate the world. However, after Dr. Kabuto was killed, the responsibility of piloting Mazinger Z fell to his grandson, Koji Kabuto, who took up the mantle to protect Earth from the encroaching forces of evil.

Mazinger Z's face, Forearms and lower legs are blue instead of black. The anime design lacks the red markings that were on Z's face and crown, The crown's color was also changed to a darker shade of grey, the breast plates are also more sharp and less blocky and finally the extra piece of armor that was between the abdomen and chest in the orginal manga was removed.

Mazinger Z's design in the 2017 sequel movie: Mazinger Z Infinity: puts a more modern spin on the orginal 70's design. The design overall has visible layering and plated armor with more detailing and textures. The layers and patterns go all the way from the crown to the legs giving it a more realistic and intricate apperance.
