Even before the final design of the Zeta Gundam was announced, its name and the fact that it could transform were the only pieces of information released in advance, and related magazines such as Comic Bonbon and Model Information ran campaigns in which readers were invited to submit original Zeta Gundam designs. Unlike later Mobile Suit Gundam SEED design competitions, which were intended to be used in the main story, this was merely a promotional campaign, and the winning design did not appear in the main story. It did appear as the "Original Zeta Gundam" in the manga Plamo Kyoshiro, published in Bonbon.
