The Salamis Kai-class is a refit of the original Salamis-class. Its most notable difference was the addition of an internal hanger built in the front of the ship behind the missile launchers, capable of storing and maintaining up to four mobile suits and a handful of Space Launch craft for its crew. The hanger entrance is situated at the top of the hull, on the edge of a new flight deck from where mobile suits were launched and retrieved. The flight deck could also serve as additional standing space for more mobile suits, as well as sub-flight systems and support craft to further expand the operational range of its mobile suits.
The primary flight deck ant the bow of the ship included a single launch catapult alongside a large landing deck to retrieve mobile suits or other craft. Mobile suits would exit the hangar to the launch catapult via an elevator. The elevator also housed a blast deflector that unfolded upwards whenever the launch catapult was deployed, similarly to older seafaring carriers. However, this was only used when mobile suits used their thrusters in a simultaneous manner as the catapult.
