In 1996, uranium deposits under Baas Island ignited, overloading Godzilla with atomic energy and turning him into Burning Godzilla. He was temporarily frozen by Super X3 in an attempt to stop his nuclear heart from exploding and destroying the planet, but upon thawing, his heart began to break down and overheat instead, which would lead to an equally destructive meltdown. G-Force formed a strategy to lure Godzilla to Tokyo using his son, grown into Godzilla Junior after the Baas Island explosion, in the hopes that the new monster Destoroyah would kill him. Instead, Destoroyah killed Junior and was ultimately overcome by Godzilla with the assistance of the JSDF. The JSDF used their freezer weapons against Godzilla as he melted down, successfully minimizing the damage. Junior's lifeless body absorbed the deadly radiation, resurrecting him and maturing him into the next Godzilla.
