His pranks led to him accidentally destroying a statue while playing a handstand during art class, and he was ordered to clean up and model for a painting as punishment. Despite his cheerfulness, he sometimes becomes pessimistic about the difficult gymnastics practice and thinks he can't do it anymore, but each time he does, he is cheered up by his junior, Yumi Sakakibara, playing the flute.

He has a grandmother, who does not appear in the story, but in episode 9, she makes him an ointment to treat his tendonitis. He also had a younger brother named Shunji, but he lost him in a traffic accident three years ago, and he is particularly passionate about things related to the bond between siblings.
