Compared to the previous generation of space vessels constructed in the U.C. 0060s, the Salamis-class incorporated many new technologies based on Minovsky physics. Its propulsion system made use of a thermonuclear rocket instead of the plasma propulsion and chemical fuel rockets used by earlier space vessels. Its main weapons were mega particle cannons, which were more energy efficient than the previously-used laser cannons and produced less waste heat, making them more suited for use in space. Finally, it incorporated a Phalanx system - a computer-controlled network of machine gun turrets - for missile defense.
The Salamis-class's primary weapons were six single-barrel mega particle cannons, three at the front and three in the rear. It was equipped with six 2-barrel machine guns, with two in the middle of the ship and another two on either side of the bridge. A 6-tube missile launcher was mounted on either side of the ship, behind the side-mounted mega particle cannon. An atmospheric entry capsule was mounted at the bottom of the ship, which could also serve as an escape craft.
Despite being over 200m long, it possessed good mobility and cruise distance, allowing it to perform a variety of different missions, such as reconnaissance and patrol. However, due to its vulnerability to Minovsky particle jamming, its usefulness decreased after the advent of mobile suits.
