The GINN Assault Type is a standard ZGMF-1017 GINN equipped with "Assault Shroud" Armor (hence the "AS" acronym in the model code), which greatly increased the mobile suit's overall performance. This set of armor is designed mainly to protect the front of the GINN from attacks, it also has built-in weapons and additional thrusters to improve firepower, propulsion capabilities as well as mobility. Additional batteries are installed in the backpack armor to meet the additional energy needs and to improve operation time.

The GINN Assault Type was developed during the First Alliance-PLANT War as one of ZAFT's plans to improve GINN's versatility. However, with the development of higher performance MS, such as ZGMF-515 CGUE, ZAFT dropped the plan. As such, only a limited set of armor was produced, making the GINN Assault Type a rare GINN variant. One unit belonged to professional MS pilot Kaite Madigan, who used it between the first and Second Alliance-PLANT War. The GINN's Assault Shroud also inspired the one used by the GAT-X102 Duel Gundam.
